Supporting ELLs in the Classroom

This course equips educators with practical strategies to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in diverse classroom settings. Participants will explore research-based instructional techniques, including scaffolding, language development strategies, and differentiation to enhance content comprehension and language acquisition. The course will explore how to foster meaningful student engagement and best practices for assessment and feedback. Through interactive discussions, lesson planning, and real-world applications, educators will gain confidence in creating inclusive learning environments that empower ELLs to succeed academically and linguistically.

  • Implement effective scaffolding techniques.
  • Apply instructional strategies that support ELLs in accessing grade-level content while developing language skills.
  • Differentiate instruction for language proficiency levels.

Steven McHugh

Steve is in his 24th year of public education. During that time, he has been a general education math teacher, ELL teacher, and special education teacher at the secondary level. He also worked as an instructional coach and an educational consultant at Northwest AEA in Sioux City, focusing on math, ELL, TAG, and school improvement. Steve is also an academic coordinator and adjunct instructor for Morningside College.
