It’s Time for Strategic Scheduling

School schedules influence nearly every aspect of teaching and learning, yet they are often built around tradition rather than strategy. A thoughtfully designed schedule can maximize instructional time, improve staff collaboration, make better use of available resources, and create stronger outcomes for students. This course explores how strategic scheduling can serve as a powerful tool for aligning people, time, and budgets with your school’s educational priorities.

Using It’s Time for Strategic Scheduling by Nathan Levenson and David James as the primary resource, participants will examine practical frameworks for evaluating current scheduling practices and identifying opportunities for improvement. Throughout the course, educators and school leaders will analyze their own systems, explore research-based scheduling strategies, and develop a customized action plan for implementing meaningful changes that support students, staff, and long-term organizational success.

Required Texts & Materials:

Levenson, N., & James, D. (2023). It’s Time for Strategic Scheduling: How to design smarter K-12 schedules that are great for students, staff, and the budget. ASCD.

Also, students are expected to read relevant journal articles and resources that are assigned and engage with podcasts and videos also assigned throughout the course.
