Do you want to dive deeply into the Science of Reading? In this course, “Scarborough’s Reading Rope: Unraveling Language Comprehension Strands,” participants will explore the components essential for developing proficient language comprehension skills. The course will focus on background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge, each playing a crucial role in fostering comprehension. The participants will leave this course ready to implement the Science of Reading in more depth. They will walk away having specific strategies to teach each of these components of the Language Comprehension strands as Hollis Scarborough describes as she articulates how students become proficient readers.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Background Knowledge: Participants will discover the significance of prior knowledge in connecting new information with existing schemas, enhancing comprehension and engagement with texts across various subjects.
- Vocabulary: The course will emphasize strategies for expanding vocabulary knowledge, including morphology and academic language. Participants will learn how a robust vocabulary enriches comprehension.
- Language Structures: Understanding sentence structures, grammar rules, and syntax will be highlighted to improve comprehension of complex texts.
- Verbal Reasoning: Techniques for analyzing and synthesizing information from spoken and written language will be explored, enhancing critical thinking skills essential for deeper comprehension.
- Literacy Knowledge: Participants will delve into the broader aspects of literacy, including genres and text features to develop an understanding how this supports a reader’s comprehension.
