Scarborough’s Reading Rope: Amplifying Fluency for Comprehension

Do you want to dive deeply into the Science of Reading? “Scarborough’s Reading Rope: Amplifying Fluency and Comprehension,” participants will engage deeply with strategies designed to develop both fluency and comprehension in readers. This course emphasizes explicit and systematic instruction to develop these critical reading skills. The participants will leave this course ready to implement the Science of Reading in more depth by understanding the importance of automaticity. This course will emphasize the need to design purposeful practice opportunities to be able to free up cognitive energy to think and make meaning. Participants will walk away having specific strategies to teach and practice fluency and automaticity for the purpose of comprehending text.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Fluency Development: Participants will learn how to implement explicit strategies such as repeated reading and fluency-building routines to help students read with accuracy, automaticity, and prosody. Participants will learn and be able to implement fluency and automaticity routines at the sound, word, phrase, sentence, and connected text level. The importance of fluency in enhancing comprehension by freeing cognitive resources for understanding meaning will be emphasized.
  • Comprehension Strategies: The course will delve into systematic approaches to teaching comprehension skills, including prediction, summarization, inferencing, and questioning techniques. Participants will understand the importance of building background knowledge and the role it plays in comprehension. Participants will explore how these strategies scaffold understanding and deepen engagement with texts across various genres and content areas
